In March of 2025, Nita received a desperate plea from Melissa to watch her dog, Coco, while she entered rehab. She couldn’t afford boarding, and the house where her kids were staying didn’t allow pets. Although it was a difficult time for the sanctuary with growth and a lack of manpower, Nita agreed to help Melissa, knowing that keeping Coco in the family could be a determining factor in whether or not she could heal and stay sober.

Three months later, not only was Melissa clean, but she wanted to come work at the sanctuary. Now Melissa, along with her family, is of great service to the sanctuary, taking care of multiple animals daily with hikes, pets, love, and projects around the ranch. Melissa vouches daily that the opportunity to work at Dog Heaven has changed her life and has been a key component of her sobriety and healing. Not only is she healing by being in nature and with the animals, but she is also working on healing past trauma by going through Nita’s Sacred Butterfly healing program.

Thank you for the support you have given Dog Heaven to provide this to Melissa and her family.
